For most of the history of software, engineering set the pace.
Building was slow. Releasing was slow. The gap between idea and working product gave the market time to react, and gave founders time to learn.
That pacing had a side effect.
It hid how hard distribution actually is.
The Friction That Used to Hide It
When engineering was slow, feedback arrived before the next version was ready. Founders discovered distribution problems gradually, while still in a position to respond.
Engineering friction wasn’t just slowing you down.
It was pacing you.
What AI Removed
AI collapsed that friction.
What used to take months now takes weeks. A small team can build something credible in days. The gap between idea and working software is the smallest it has ever been.
That part is real.
What didn’t change is distribution.
Not because there’s more noise or more competition. Those things are true but they aren’t the point.
The point is that AI didn’t make distribution harder.
It made it visible.
The constraint was always there. You just felt it later.
The Mismatch
Build speed accelerated. Adoption speed didn’t.
People still change behavior slowly. Organizations still adopt tools slowly. Trust still builds through consistency, accuracy, and moments where the system proves itself under pressure.
That hasn’t compressed.
So founders can now build complete systems before discovering whether the market will actually act on them.
That almost never used to happen this early.
Where Enterprise Distribution Actually Breaks
Especially in the environments I’ve spent most of my career in.
Enterprise teams don’t adopt something because it’s interesting. They adopt it when they trust it enough to act on it.
Showing someone an insight is one thing. Getting them to make a decision based on it is different. To stand behind it in a meeting. To let it change how work actually gets done.
Most things break right there.
Not at awareness. Not at evaluation. At the moment of action.
That moment has a specific texture in enterprise. It’s the analyst who gets the output, nods, and then rebuilds the analysis manually before sending it up. It’s the ops lead who sees the recommendation but waits for a human to confirm it before the incident call ends. It’s the executive who likes the system in the demo but won’t reference it in a board meeting until someone they trust has validated it three times.
None of those people are wrong. They are doing exactly what enterprise professionals do with systems that haven’t earned behavioral trust yet.
Will someone trust the output enough to not redo the work manually? Will they rely on it during a real incident, when stakes are high? Will they defend it when someone challenges it?
If the answer to any of those is no, you don’t have distribution.
You have exposure.
The Constraint That Remains
Build speed is no longer the hard problem.
Adoption speed is.
People don’t change behavior faster because the product shipped faster. Organizations don’t trust systems sooner because the engineering was cleaner. The human side of distribution runs on its own clock.
AI accelerated everything it could reach.
It didn’t remove the hardest constraint.
It just made it visible sooner.
