The Models Work. The Plumbing Doesn't

I tried to build something simple last week.

A competitive intelligence agent. Drop a company name, get back a structured brief. The kind of task that should take an afternoon to wire up.

Three hours later I had not built the agent. I had mapped the opportunity.

What Simple Actually Requires

The models are not the problem. Claude, GPT, Gemini — the intelligence layer is genuinely remarkable. Ask any of them to research a competitor and the output is better than what most analysts produce in a day.

The gap appears the moment you try to connect that intelligence to anything real.

To build what I described — something that runs on a trigger, pulls from live sources, and lands output in a place your team actually works — you need OAuth credentials, webhook infrastructure, API wiring between systems, somewhere to store and surface the result, and someone technical enough to maintain it when something breaks. Which it will.

This is not an exotic workflow. It is the most basic version of what every operator wants AI to do.

Right now it is either a hack, a significant engineering project, or a dedicated machine running locally just to hold the pieces together. That friction is not a bug in the AI story. It is the most important signal in it.

Where AWS Was in 2004

The models work. The infrastructure layer around them — the part that takes intelligence and delivers it into the systems where work actually happens — is years behind where the conversation suggests it should be.

AWS took a decade to become what it is. The cloud did not get easy overnight. Before the abstraction layers matured, standing up a web server required serious infrastructure decisions that had nothing to do with the application you were actually trying to build.

AI agents are at that exact moment.

The intelligence exists. The plumbing does not. And every time a founder or operator hits that wall, they are experiencing what the next generation of infrastructure is being built to solve.

The no-code tools are moving in the right direction. They are not there yet. No-code still means OAuth flows, webhook configuration, error handling, and data mapping decisions that consume hours before a single agent does a single useful thing.

The Gap Between the Demo and the Deployment

Leaders are being told agents will autonomously handle their workflows. That output will land in the right system. That the era of intelligent automation is here.

In demos, that is true. In production, for the operators who need it most, it is still wiring and workarounds.

The people making AI investment decisions are not building agents. The people building agents know exactly how hard it is. That gap produces misaligned expectations on both sides — and a real market need in the middle.

Why This Is the Right Moment

The best infrastructure bets happen when the intelligence layer is ready and the delivery layer is not. That tension is exactly where durable companies get built.

AWS did not arrive after the internet matured. It arrived while developers were still stitching together servers in data centers, solving the same plumbing problems every time they wanted to ship something new.

The AI equivalent of that moment is now. The models are ready. The abstraction layer that makes them accessible to every operator, in every workflow, without an engineering team standing between the intelligence and the work — that layer is being built.

Three hours of friction last week told me more about where the real value in AI is being created than any market report has. The gap is obvious to anyone who tries to build across it. That is what makes it worth building into.
